For about ten years, Dr David Barnard, President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Manitoba has held periodic Visionary Conversations which include leading academics from the University of Manitoba together with leaders in Manitoba's community to discuss critical topics. In the last Visionary Conversation during his tenure which ends later this year, the subject under discussion was "How can we come together to combat the impacts of drug addiction".
The assembled group of experts presented many useful and helpful ideas. One thing was very clear - the current system of mental health and addictions care and support is not working well. The disparate parts are not well connected into a well functioning whole. There are too many gaps in the system, and too often those with addictions are faced with waiting at critical times when quick access is essential.
