Comparison between Manitoba and South Dakota shows dramatic impact of Physical Distancing

Manitoba implemented physical distancing measures in mid-March.  South Dakota has still not made physical distancing mandatory.   The result is a dramatic difference in the incidence of covid-19 viral infections between the two jurisdictions.   This graph shows the number of people with Covid-19 infections from March 27 to April 14.  Manitoba (red line) started leveling off about April 4 and has seen only a small increase in Covid-19 infections since then.   South Dakota (blue line) has seen a dramatic increase in Covid-19 infections since April 4.  Those who are skeptical of the impact of physical distancing in Manitoba should look at this graph!

Data are from the Johns Hopkins daily tabulations

  1. Who's winning here? Does it matter how many people get a mild version of COVID-19? What really matters is deaths. Manitoba currently has a 2% death rate from COVID-19. South Dakota has a death rate of 0.5%. Manitoba residents are dying at 4x the rate of South Dakota. I wouldn't say that Manitoba is ahead right now.

    2. Manitoba's death rate is only as high as it is because the amount of people affected is not as astronomical as other places. As of today, South Dakota's tally stands at 1,311 positive cases, 931 cases that are actively being searched, and 7 deaths (with 55 hospitalizations). In Manitoba, there are 246 cases of COVID-19, with only 5 deaths and 9 hospitalizations.

What really matters here, Melissa, is not death: it's prevention. If Manitoba's measures keep the number below 1000, then we don't run the risk of having 1000 people dead. The death toll in South Dakota will rise with no physical distancing measures. The global mortality rate of closed COVID-19 cases is 21%. 21% of 300 is 63 (which is still too many people dead). 21% of 1500 (which South Dakota will certainly reach in a day or two) is 315.

It matters how many people catch any variation of the virus because it can and will kill. If the death toll doesn't rise in South Dakota, then praise God, but if it does, they will only have themselves to blame. Please don't think that just because you won't end up dead doesn't mean everyone else won't. Your short-sightedness is the reason why people are dying.

    3. Without knowing the testing numbers and the positive rates the comparison isn't necessarily valid. If the higher case number is due to much more random testing then the death rate will be naturally lower anyway.

  3. I live in Sioux Falls, SD. No—we’re not idiots and we’re doing really well with social distancing. Our numbers are so high because of a meat packing plant that put no restrictions in place, and even paid their employees (mostly immigrants) a $500 bonus if they didn’t miss any days of work due to illness. Many of these people live in households with numerous people and no place to quarantine. I feel really sorry for them☹️

  9. An amazing testimony on on how i conceive, also cure from fibroid, i wonder why people still don't believe that roots and herbs are very essential and fruitful in different aspect, especially when you can't conceive and bear children. I am a living witness because I tried all I could to be pregnant but all to no avail, on this faithful day, i decided to check the net for updates on healthy living and i came across testimonies of lot of women who Priest Babaka has helped with his native herbs to conceive. i decided to put a try because this has been my greatest problem in life so I emailed Priest Babaka, and he told me what to do which i did, after which he sent me some roots and herbs syrup and gave me step by step guild lines on how and when to have sex with my man. I missed my menstrual flow within a short period of taking it, and the doctor confirmed that I am pregnant. I am very glad to tell the world that I just put to bed a bouncing baby boy last week. Contact Priest Babaka for your own testimony via Email: babaka.wolf@gmail.com Or Facebook at priest.babaka

Dougald Lamont speaks at Meth Forum last night to present positive ideas to address the epidemic, while exposing the lack of action by the Pallister Conservatives

Last night at the Notre Dame Recreation Centre in St. Boniface, at an Election Forum on the Meth Crisis in Manitoba, Dougald Lamont spoke eloquently about the severity of the meth epidemic and described the Liberal plan to address it.  The Liberal Plan will make sure that there is a single province-wide phone number for people, or friends of people, who need help dealing with meth to call (as there is in Alberta) and that there will be rapid access to a seamless series of steps - stabilization, detoxification, treatment, extended supportive housing etc so that people with meth addiction can be helped well and effectively and so that they can rebuild their lives.  The Liberal meth plan will be helped by our approach to mental health (putting psychological therapies under medicare), and to poverty (providing better support).  It will also be helped by our vigorous efforts to help young people understand the problems with meth in our education system and to provide alternative positive

The Indigenous Science Conference in Winnipeg June 14-16

June 14 to 16, I spent three days at the Turtle Island Indigenous Science Conference.  It was very worthwhile.   Speaker after speaker talked of the benefits of using both western or mainstream science and Indigenous science.  There is much we can learn from both approaches.   With me above is Myrle Ballard, one of the principal organizers of the conference.  Myrle Ballard, from Lake St. Martin in Manitoba, worked closely with Roger Dube a professor emeritus at Rochester Institute of Technology, and many others to make this conference, the first of its kind, a success.  As Roger Dube, Mohawk and Abenaki, a physicist, commented "My feeling is that the fusion of traditional ecological knowledge and Western science methodology should rapidly lead the researchers to much more holistic solutions to problems."   Dr. Myrle Ballard was the first person from her community to get a PhD.  She is currently a professor at the University of Manitoba and the Director of Indigenous Science
